What is Proton Therapy?

Proton Therapy is the most advanced form of radiation therapy. Compared with X-rays, protons do not scatter much in the tissue and release most of their energy when they hit the tumor and deliver no exit dose beyond the tumor boundary. This maximum is called the Bragg peak. Therefore, proton therapy allows for the most aggressive cancer therapy possible while minimizing harmful effects to healthy normal tissue. Proton therapy can be used to treat variety of cancer; Lung, Prostate, Brain, Spinal or vertebral body tumors, Skull base sarcomas, Pediatric brain tumors, Head and neck, Eye melanoma. As a matter of fact, proton therapy is most commonly used to treat prostate cancer in the United States.
